As the world’s population grows, so does demand for food, increasing the environmental impacts of agriculture. Rising prices of basic food crops and increasing competition for land and water between farmers and communities cause serious social and economic consequences.

Providing affordable food for everyone while protecting the planet’s resources is one of society’s greatest challenges. As sourcing our ingredients makes up the largest part of our environmental footprint, we have a responsibility to reduce our impacts. The ways in which we source also present opportunities to create mutual benefits for our business, suppliers and sourcing communities. We seek to buy from suppliers who respect their workers and local communities and who are reducing the environmental impacts of their operations so affordable, good-quality ingredients will be available in the future.

With thousands of raw materials in our supply chain, we have to prioritize. We focus on some materials based on the volume we use and others because their impacts are particularly high. Still, more raw materials fall into these categories, but for these the best path forward is not yet clear. Read Our Approach for more information.

We use techniques such as lifecycle analysis to identify where and how we can make the biggest difference. Lifecycle analysis assesses environmental impacts at each stage of a product's life, from raw material extraction and processing, to manufacture, distribution, use, maintenance and disposal.

Our approach is to increase the availability of our raw materials through innovative agricultural science that decreases environmental impacts while working to, where necessary, improve living standards in communities that produce these materials. We work with governments, industry, academic and nongovernmental organizations to amplify the positive impacts of these initiatives.

We also use our relationships with suppliers to encourage industrywide change and work with them to change their practices and improve the sustainability of the goods they produce. Standardized in 2011, our supplier code of conduct sets globally consistent criteria for all our sourcing partners.

Key Targets

We are committed to sourcing:

  • 100 percent of cocoa from certified* sources by 2020 — an industry first
  • 100 percent of fish and seafood products from sustainable sources by 2020 — another industry first
  • 100 percent of palm oil from supplies certified* by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil by 2015
  • 100 percent of coffee beans** from certified* sources by 2013
  • 100 percent of black tea** from certified* sources by 2015

Mars Helps to Unravel Cocoa Genome

In 2010, our collaboration with IBM and the United States Department of Agriculture announced the sequencing, assembly and annotation of the cocoa genome, sharing this information publicly so scientists worldwide can use it to develop more resilient cocoa crops. This work is a meaningful boost to efforts to establish a more productive and sustainable cocoa industry and improve the lives of the world’s cocoa farmers. Read more.

Mars Food Supports Cutting-Edge Farming Research

Growing rice can be water intensive, so good water management is vital, especially in water-stressed areas. Mars-funded research into five rice varieties found that the timing of watering during the growing cycle is critical. These findings contribute to a growing body of knowledge about “precision farming,” where best practices ensure optimal yields while protecting vital natural resources such as water and soil. Mars Petcare Drives Standard for Responsible Pet Food

We are expanding our use of Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification to assure consumers that our brands contain responsibly sourced seafood. A selection of SHEBA® and WHISKAS® varieties in Europe have carried the MSC logo since January 2011. To achieve certification, the factories producing these brands must also receive MSC approval. Our facilities in Gargzdai, Lithuania, and Verden, Germany, are certified to the MSC standard.

* Certification verifies that the raw materials we use are sourced in a way that is good for producers, the environment and the industry.
** Includes the brands THE BRIGHT TEA CO, ALTERRA and DOVE®/GALAXY®
